Moving to Australia?
Things to consider when planning a move to Australia
It is exciting moving to a new country, however it can also a daunting task. We’ve compiled some fast facts to help make your transition easier and listed some of the first things that you should do when you arrive in Australia.
1. Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)
Do this first. To receive an income in Australia, you need a Tax File Number (TFN). Click here to apply for your TFN online: www.ato.gov.au
2. Register with Medicare
The Australian Government provides help with basic medical expenses through a scheme called Medicare. www.medicareaustralia.gov.au
3. Enrol Your Children in School
Under Australian law, children must attend school until they are 15 years old. Refer to our School Info page for more information on Australian schools.
4. Apply for a Driver’s Licence
In NSW, the Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) issues drivers licences. www.rta.nsw.gov.au
5. Pets
To bring cats and dogs to Australia, they must meet all of the AQIS (Australian Quarantine & Inspections Service) import conditions prior to export. This is to minimise the risk of exotic diseases being introduced into Australia. Click here and select the country you intend to export a cat or dog from to determine if the importation to Australia is permitted. If permitted, you will be able to download an information package that outlines the AQIS import conditions that apply and the steps involved.
6. Buying Property
NSW has unique property fees and charges that are important to know before you make your property purchase. For example, there is no land tax payable on your primary place of residence, if the dutiable land value (not the purchase price unless is a land only purchase) is less than $3 million. If the land value of your property is over $3 million, then premium property duty is payable.
